Hunger and Thirst, Part 1

We all have a hunger within us.  Some hunger for fame, power, fortune, or pleasure.  Hunger can be a good thing or bad, depending on what we pursue to satisfy the hunger.

In my younger days; my teen years, I had such a desire for the wrong things.  I tried to satisfy my hunger with very destructive activities.  I had no idea why I was pusuing those things until Jesus came into my life.  I then realized that I had actually been hungry for God and was trying to fill the void with pleasures that left me empty.  When I accepted Jesus as my Savior, God gave me such a supernatural hunger for the Word of God.  I would literally spend hours in the scriptures every day, and I still do.  I found out that the Word satisfies like nothing else can.  I noticed that the more I ate and drank of the Word, the more of it I wanted.

I have found that sin, the world and the things that promise such a great time will steal your hunger for God and leave you empty.  Always remember, your flesh will desire what it is accustomed to getting.  Therefore, when you decide to feed it the things of God rather than the things of the world, its tastes will slowly but surely begin to change.  The more you feed on God's Word and spend time in His presence, the urge for other things will die.  Your desire for them will fade.

It is a wonderful cycle.  As I study the Word, pray, worship, go to church, witness for Christ, and help others, the more I want to.  The more we set our hearts on the things of God, the more we are filled.  And when we pour out what we get from God in order to help others, then we get to go back to Him to get filled up again.  The cycle never gets old; it just gets more satisfying all the time.

As Jesus said in Matthew 5:6 (NKJV):

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.

So, what are you waiting for?  Get into the Word, feast on Heaven's buffet, and help yourself to a great big serving of God!
