We Have Dominion to Rule

Today, I want to take a look at the Word and discuss what it says about man’s dominion.

O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. Psalm 8:1-2 (KJV)

In Matthew 21:16, Jesus quotes these verses from Psalms. Instead of the word strength, He uses the word praise. Therefore, we could say, “Thou hast ordained praise…” And the Word still means to silence, or shut up, the enemy and avenger. So it says that God has given us praise to silence the enemy.

Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand; To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord. Psalm 149:6-9 (KJV)

We clearly have dominion through the words of our mouths. The word execute also means enforce. Our words enforce God’s judgement over our enemy.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Genesis 1:26 (KJV)

He made us in the God class, giving us His image and likeness. God has given us dominion and authority over creation. God has created us to rule and reign.

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Psalm 8:5-9 (KJV)

This says that we were made a little lower than the angels, but the word translated angels is actually the word Elohim, which is a plural name for God. Therefore, this tells us that we were made a little lower than the Elohim, or the triune God. We are under God and His authority, but God’s creation is under our authority. Adam gave that authority away, but Jesus got it back and returned it to us.

Psalm 8 begins and ends with, “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” This reminds us that our authority and dominion is in the name of the Lord Jesus. The name of Jesus is above every name, and we have the authority to use His name.

We rule by praise, speaking God’s Word, and using the name of Jesus. That is how we enforce the victory that Jesus gave us. We can now rule over adverse circumstances and situations.

Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. Hebrews 2:8 (KJV)

If everything is already under Jesus’ feet, why does it say that we don’t yet see all things under His feet? The reason is that Jesus is expecting the church to rise up and use the authority He gave us. Let’s choose to use weapons of our warfare such as the Name, the Word, and praise, to take dominion. As we do, we enforce His victory until He returns to get His church.
