No Excuse

For ever since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through His workmanship [all His creation, the wonderful things that He has made], so that they [who fail to believe and trust in Him] are without excuse and without defense. Romans 1:20 (Amplified Bible, AMP)

According to this scripture, none of us has any excuse for not believing in God. In the order of the universe, in the intricate workings of every living thing, the intelligence and magnificence of the Creator is evident. In order to deny the Lord, man has to come up with outlandish and ludicrous theories to replace Almighty God as the Creator of all we see and know about. Just looking at the human body and the design of every body part and the complexity of every human biological system, it requires a ridiculous stretch of the imagination and the conscious decision to believe a lie in order to reject God. Even a quick glance at a leaf from a tree reveals a purposeful design, and thus, a Designer.

In addition to turning a blind eye to the evidence for a Creator in creation, man must also resist his innate desire to worship the Lord by giving his worship to other things. Man has created his own deities such as Buddah, Allah, and hundreds of others. However, it is possible that the most dangerous object of worship ever honored by man has been himself. Todays’ culture is overflowingwith self-worship; the worship of man as his own god and the director of his own destiny. Some people call it secular humanism. The earth is full of “self-made” men and women. The Bible speaks of all of this in the verses that immediately follow Romans 1:20.

Or even though they knew God [as the Creator], they did not honor Him as God or give thanks [for His wondrous creation]. On the contrary, they became worthless in their thinking [godless, with pointless reasonings, and silly speculations], and their foolish heart was darkened.  Claiming to be wise, they became fools,  and exchanged the glory and majesty and excellence of the immortal God for an image [worthless idols] in the shape of mortal man and birds and four-footed animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their own hearts to [sexual] impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them [abandoning them to the degrading power of sin],  because [by choice] they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. Romans 1:21-25 (Amplified Bible, AMP)

Verse 22 says that claiming to be wise, they became fools. Wow. It doesn’t get much clearer than that. When we refuse to worship the real Creator and acknowledge Him as God; when we concoct something else to worship; when we decide that we are all-wise and worthy of worship in ourselves, we are fools.

The [empty-headed] fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable deeds; there is none that does good or right. Psalm 14:1 (Amplified Bible Classic Edition, AMPC)

God meant that statement so much that He said it again in Psalm 53:1. If we want to be truly wise, we must humble ourselves before the One Who really is worthy of all worship; the Lord Jesus Christ. He is God and Creator of all.
