Don't Rush It

For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Romans 10:2 (New International Version, NIV)

Desire without knowledge is not good— how much more will hasty feet miss the way! Proverbs 19:2 (New International Version, NIV)

When we rush into things because we are excited and zealous, we can end up going the wrong way and doing the wrong thing. Before we do anything or make any decisions, it is wise to get knowledge on the subject. Wisdom tells us to get the facts before we rush headlong into something. It is smart to take time to prepare and get more information before we plunge into anything.

For example, before getting married, it is crucial to take time to really get to know the other person. Yes, you may find them attracive and you may be tired of being alone, but marrying the wrong person can send you straight into a life of misery. It pays to spend a decent period of time with them so you can see them in various situations and circumstances. We are all on our best behavior in the beginning, but eventually you will see more of who they really are and how they really respond to life’s problems. Don’t rush it.

As you make decisions, always look ahead and consider the consequences of your choices, both to yourself and others. Ask yourself if this choice will really put you closer to where you want to be in life. Take the time to know what you’re getting into and what the results may be- the life you save may be your own!

If someone wants you to hurry and rush into something, nine times out of ten it is not God’s best for you. It is better to take things slow, one step at a time. If you proceed with caution and wisdom, you can more easily discern God’s will for you before you get too deep into something that isn’t what He has for you. Take it one step at a time so you can more easily back up and get back on track if you make a mistake.

Pray, seek God, wait on Him, spend time in His Word, and let Him speak to you. Then listen and obey. When you learn to wait on God and not jump ahead of His plan and timing, things will go more smoothly for you. Don’t force things. God will open doors that are right for you and close the doors that aren’t. God will lead you step by step. As you follow God and wait on Him, He will lead you day by day.
