Difficult Questions: Where Did the Giants Come From?"
From time to time, we dig into Scripture and seek answers to difficult questions from the Bible. Today, we are asking the question: “Where did the giants come from?”
There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. Genesis 6:4 (NKJV)
Fallen angels had intercourse with women and created a race of giants. Notice the women were called the daughters of men, meaning they were humans. However, the men were called the sons of God- they were not human, but angels who took on human form. This occurred before the flood of Noah, which was one of the major reasons for the flood. And then we read again of giants in the land after the flood, so it must have happened again. There were giants there until David killed them off. Remember, giants were in the Promised Land when Israel was to enter the land and take possession.
Jesus said that angels do not marry (Matthew 22:30, Mark 12:25). However, they can present themselves in human form. For example, Hebrews tells us not to forget to entertain strangers because they could be entertaining angels unaware. And don’t forget about the time when God visited Abraham and two angels accompanied Him- and they even ate with Abraham. They had human appearance. So angels can appear in human form. Apparently, these angels decided to remain as humans because they wanted the daughters of men.
Was there an evil strategy behind this? There definitely was. In Genesis, God had told the devil that there would come the seed of a woman to crush his head. The devil knew that a person would be born to end his reign over mankind. In an attempt to stop it, he had fallen angels sleep with women to contaminate and pervert the human bloodline. And the result was a race of giants. This is one reason that all mankind except Noah’s family, was destroyed in the flood. And it was a key reason that God commanded Israel to kill the inhabitants of the Promised Land when they possessed it. Unfortunately, they did not do what they were told, and it wasn’t until David killed off the giants that the command was fulfilled.
What happened to the angels? For their wicked deeds in trying to contaminate the human race, they were punished severely and eternally.
In the same way, there were heavenly messengers in rebellion who went outside their rightful domain of authority and abandoned their appointed realms. God bound them in everlasting chains and is keeping them in the dark abyss of the netherworld until the judgment of the great day. Jude 1:6 (The Passion Translation, TPT)
These rebellious angels are bound in the most utter darkness in the deepest regions of hell. Their attempt to prevent Jesus from coming was rewarded with isolation in such complete and total darkness that you can feel it- and torment in the abyss. As a matter of fact, Jesus preached to these fallen angels when He went to hell (I Peter 3:19). He likley pointed out to them how their plot failed and that He, the Messiah, had succeeded in coming.
So, there you have it. Giants were the offspring of fallen angels and women in an attempt tp prevent the birth of the Savior- and they were killed during Noah’s flood and again later by David.
