Substitution- Part 1: Our Sin Offering
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. II Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)
Leviticus chapters 1 through 5 covers the five offerings for the forgiveness of sin so fellowship with God could be restored. For us, all of this has been fulfilled by Christ, which the verse above testifies. God made Jesus to be sin- or a sin offering- for us. Jesus took our place, actually became sin, and nailed it all to the cross.
He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:14 (New Living Translation, NLT)
Jesus was our sin offering. He was righteous and sinless, but for us, He became sin. He did it to make us righteous. We had an old sin nature- one of death. Now, because of Christ and His substitutionary sacrifice, dying as a sin offering in our place, we are righteous. We are made right with God and we no longer have a sin consciousness, but now our nature is righteous.
We were made sinners by Adam’s sin, but now we are made righteous and sinless through Jesus. He is the Lamb of God Who took away the sins of the world (John 1:29). He is our sin offering, given to make us righteous and reconciled back to God. We’re now sons of God, and our fellowship with God has been restored.
