Divine Protection
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. 9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. Psalm 91:1-16 (KJV)
This Psalm is a promise of God’s protection and blessing. However, with God, nothing is automatic. We must claim His promises by faith in order to experience them.
According to the first verse, we must rest and dwell in the secret place of God; in His divine presence. We can live under God’s protective care. The shadow speaks of protection and covering. We must say who God is and who He is to us (verse 2). As we spend time with Him in His presence, we hear the voice of His Word. God speaks to us and we speak it over our lives. This gives God something to work with- something to fulfill. We must say who God is to us by personal revelation and experience.
It is interesting to note that this psalm mentions four of God’s names. In verse 1, He is called Most High, the God who is greater than all and over all. Verse 1 also calls Him Almighty, which means God who is all-powerful to defeat our enemies. Verse 2 calls Him Lord, which means Lord Master Ruler. It literally means my Lord. We must make Jesus our personal Lord in order to see His lordship in our lives. And verse 2 also calls Him God, which is the Hebrew word Elohim, meaning the supreme God- and it also refers to the Trinity. As we are in relationship with God, we learn to confess His names over our lives, As we do, this psalm becomes active in our lives and we can claim all that it promises.
We can claim deliverance (verse 3), divine covering (verse 4), no fear (verse 5), and protection from disease and destruction (verse 6). We have the promise of verse 7, which says that no matter what goes on around us, it won’t come near us or touch us. We can claim the defeat of wickedness (verse 8). In verse 9, we live and remain in God’s presence, because we have access through the blood of Jesus Christ. Because we are in His presence, no evil, no calamity, no accident or plague will come near our home or wherever we stay (verse 10). We can claim the protection of God’s angels over us (verses 11-12). We can walk in spiritual authority over our enemies (verse 13). Because we love God, He will deliver us from all that goes on around us, setting us high above what’s going on in the earth (verse 14). Why? Because we know God’s name. We discussed four of His names that appear in this psalm. However, the name of Jesus is the all-in-all of His names. Everything that God is is in the name of Jesus. When we speak the name of Jesus, we’re declaring all God is. As we call on God, He answers, stays with us in times of trouble, and brings us to a place of honor (verse 15). Everything will be all right. There’s no dreaded outcome. We do not fear for we know God is near and He is for us. He delivers us and removes all shame. Andwe will experience long life. Our lives will not be cut off prematurely by destruction, disease or death. God will satisfy us and we’ll see the Lord’s salvation because we live and dwell in Him (verse 16).
