Our Real Source of Help

I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! Psalm 121:1-2 (New Living Translation, NLT)

Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. Psalm 108:12 (KJV)

When we go through things that are difficult and perplexing, it can be tempting to look to people to help us. Whether we look to the government, ministers, friends, or just well-meaning people, they are only flesh and can only do so much. When doctors don’t have a cure, when it seems we have no friends, or when counselors have no real answers, we can look to God. When we feel unloved, when we work a lot, when we have family issues, or when there’s more month than money, we can turn to God. Who can understand us like God? Who can heal a broken heart like God?

We sometimes have to turn away from the natural response we have to seek human help and look instead to God. Our help does not come from man (or from mountains), but from God. God made the heavens and the earth, and surely He can make things work out right in our lives. As big as heaven and earth are, God is bigger. We see the physical things God has made, but we must choose to see with spiritual eyes and see the God who has made everything we see. He can make all things right. he can make all things new. He will give us what we need. We may face big problems, but our God is bigger. We must not look to man to give us what only God can give us. As Psalm 108 says, vain, or useless, is the help of man in times of trouble.

God wants us to totally look to and rely on Him for:

Every need to be met.

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 (New International Version, NIV)

Every desire to be given.

Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (NKJV)

Every purpose to be fulfilled.

The Lord will work out his plans for my life— for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me. Psalm 138:8 (New Living Translation, NLT)

God alone can help us. He will meet the need. He will give us our hearts’ desires. He will fulfill His purpose for our lives. We must look away from all that distracts, and look unto Jesus, who is the Author (Beginner, Developer) and Finisher (Completer) of our faith.

I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return]. Philippians 1:6 (Amplified Bible, AMP)
