Walking Through Ephesians

The book of Ephesians is a rich book. One of the themes of it is the emphasis on walking out our freedom, healing, etc. Ephesians chapters 1 through 3 speak of who we are in Christ and what we have as believers. Ephesians chapters 4 through 6 speak of practical matters, discussing our walking out who we are in order to possess what we have in Christ. Each chapter has so much wisdom! Open your Bible to Ephesians and read each chapter as we discuss it here.

Ephesians 1

This chapter talks of God blessing us, choosing us, redeeming and forgiving us, and giving us an inheritance. It ends with a powerful prayer that we’ll see and know what belongs to us.

Ephesians 2

In this chapter we find information about our new life in Christ. We must see what God has done for us so we can see who He has made us. Thus, the first two chapters of Ephesians addresses these things.

Ephesians 3

This chapter speaks of us belonging to God and being a part of God’s family. It covers our fellowship with God and with one another. God is all about relationship.

Ephesians 4

Ephesians 4 looks at unity, the ministry gifts, and the purpose of those gifts. The ministry gifts, also called the five-fold ministry, is for the purpose of maturing the saints so we can do the work of the ministry. This verse also speaks of the old and new life. As we grow in the Lord, we put off the old life to live the new life. It shows us how we are to walk. In verses 1-6, it says we are to walk in unity of the Spirit. Verses 7-16 covers the ministry gifts and their purpose-so we grow and walk in maturity of love. Verses 17-29 tell us to ditch the old carnal life and live the new life Jesus purchased for us. It tells us what that new life looks like. Finally, verses 30-32 instruct to do what the Holy Spirit wants us to do and avoid doing the things that grieve Him.

Ephesians 5

This chapter tells us to walk in love. We do this as we are imitators of God, Who is love. We aren’t to walk in the dark, but in the light. As we walk as children of light, we walk circumspectly, or accurately. As we walk in love, we walk in God and in light. Walking in the Word, which brings light, prevents us from walking in the dark. This chapter shows us what it means to walk accurately as Christians. Walking in the wisdom of God is walking accurately.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, Ephesians 5:15 (New International Version, NIV)

Ephesians 6

Lastly, chapter 6 continues the discussion on walking. Verses 1-9 gives us practical ways to walk out our Christianity in relationships. Verses 10-24 shows us how to be strong in our walk. We stand our ground and advance, walking out the Word to enforce the victory over every enemy as we spread the Gospel. We are to walk out who we are to possess what has been promised and given to us.

Take some time on your own to read and meditate on the truths in Ephesians. God is telling us so much in this brief, but powerful, letter.
