The Lord God
For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. Psalm 84:11 (KJV) emphasis mine
It is especially powerful that the Psalmist used both Lord and God in this verse. In combining them, he makes quite a statement.
Lord
This word describes Him as the self-existent or eternal Jehovah (or Yahveh in Hebrew). It is used for I Am that I am, telling that He is the One who is, who was, and who always will be. It reveals Him as the self-existing One. He exists all by Himself, needing nothing or no one for Him to be God. He never needed a beginning to exist and He does not have an end. Jehovah speaks of His redemptive names, such as Jehovah Jireh, the God who sees and provides.
God
This is Elohim, the God and Creator, the Judge and Savior, faithful to His covenant. It speaks of His fullness of power.
Put Them Together
Because He is Lord God, He is self-existent and eternal with all power and creative ability. As such, He gives grace, glory, and goodness. These are attributes, or characteristics of who God is. Because the Lord God is gracious, glorious, and good, He bestows, or releases, this to those with whom He is in covenant relationship. Because we walk uprightly, there are no hindrances or blessing blockers to prevent Him from being Lord God in our lives. That allows Him to do for us what only He can do.
He is a sun and shield, shining down His grace, glory, and every good thing. He shields us from the enemy to protect us and get us to the destination He has planned for us. God shines all around in His glory. His grace releases goodness to us. The Self-Existing Creator is there to do new things in us and in our lives. Look up, He is shining down on you now. He is reaching out to us to meet our every need, faithful to His covenant. He gives justice and makes everything right. He saves us from all harm, because he is the Lord God, the eternal, self-existing, all-powerful One who is with us!
