Sons That Serve- Part 2
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15 (New International Version, NIV)
We are servants of God and friends of God while we are also sons of God. Jesus is saying that He is drawing us closer into a more intimate relationship with Him. He’s taking us into a deeper relationship so He can reveal secrets with us from the Father. A servant serves, and rightly so, but a friend is a covenant relationship. In a covenant relationship, the parties involved share one another’s things and hearts.
If we are to serve God, it must go deeper and be based on friendship and sonship. Friendship points to relationship, but sonship points to inheritance. We are heirs of God and equal heirs with Christ. We are servants, but because of the New Covenant, Christ calls us friends. We are servants who become friends and sons of God. When God wins our hearts, we become friends, and we are adopted as sons. And the closer we get to the Lord, the more we want to serve.
In similar fashion, we win people to Jesus. We serve them because Christ serves us. Thus, we befriend them, showing we are out to give to them and not take from them. As a result, we win them over as friends. Being friends with them gives us a voice into their lives and influence to win them to the Lord, whereby they become sons of God.
So, we see that we are sons that serve God and others. We are friendly, which wins people to us as friends and wins them to the Lord as sons and friends. In that way, we are serving God and people. We truly are sons that serve.
