God's Mercy

God's Mercy

O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psalm 136:1 (KJV)

The Hebrew word for mercy in this verse is the word hesed, which means God’s everlasting love that keeps covenant. God’s mercy never stops. It lasts forever. There will never be a time when God does not love us and keep His promises to us. His promises are always yes and in Christ amen.

God’s mercies, or His never-ending covenant love, cover every area of our lives. It is new every morning, meaning we cannot exhaust God’s love for us. Because God is good, He will continue to meet our needs, proving His love to us and showing us that God is love.

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Ephesians 2:4 (KJV)

In this verse, mercy in the Greek is eleos, meaning pity, compassion, and is the outward manifestation of pity reaching out to others to meet needs. Mercy is God’s love in action. God saw our needs and reached out to save us through Christ. God is rich in mercy. He has an abundant supply that lasts and endures forever.

Ephesians 2:4-10 speaks of God’s mercy and some of the things God’s mercy does for us daily.

Vs. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

God is so rich in mercy, you cannot bankrupt His mercy.

Vs. 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) Vs. 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Because of His unfailing love, His mercy, God raised us up, gave us life, and positioned us with His own Son.

Vs. 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

God is looking forward to continuing to show His love to us in the ages to come.

Vs. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

God’s love, His mercy, showed us His grace, which is a free gift that gives salvation.

Vs. 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Our works cannot earn or purchase salvation, but the work of Christ has already purchased it- a work of love and mercy provided through His grace. We cannot take credit for anything that God has given us out of His great love for us.

Vs. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

God’s mercy, love, and grace given to us continues to make us His workmanship, or His masterpiece. This enables us to do good works. God’s work saves us, then He continues His good work in us so we can do the works of Christ. As we believe, as we receive His mercy daily and we become who He designed us to be.

Oh give thanks to the Lord for His mercy, His love and His compassion, endures and lasts forever!
