A Matter of Trust

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

This verse says we can trust ourselves and try to figure things out on our own, but often it causes us to simply become confused and gives us no answers. When we trust God with our hearts, we live deeper, gaining insight from our hearts and not our heads. And we must understand that there are some things we will never figure out. We must trust God when things don’t make sense or things don’t look good. We can trust God because He is totally trustworthy.

Trust God to meet your need, whether financial, relational, physical, vocational, educational, etc. Trust God to lead you; He knows the path. He planned it ahead of time.

Trust God to fight for you. When someone comes against you, know that the battle is the Lord’s. Vengeance belongs to God and He will vindicate you.

Trust God when something is taken from you or never given to you in the first place. God will make it up to you. He will pay you back and give you even more than was withheld from you.

Trust God’s perfect timing in every season of your life. He will fulfill His promises to you as He works out His plan for your life.

We have to trust God no matter what the need may be or what we are facing in life- or we’ll be miserable. The more we see God’s faithfulness, the easier it becomes to trust Him. He trains and teaches us to trust Him by the experiences we have with Him.

Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips. That thy trust may be in the Lord, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee? Proverbs 22:17-21 (KJV)

This tells us how to trust God. We must hear, do, abide, speak, and trust.

  • Hear: Listen to God’s Word and counsel from godly people (verse 17).

  • Do: We must apply our hearts to knowledge. Get God’s Word into your heart to know God and experience God by His Word, Spirit, power, and presence (verse 17).

  • Abide: Keep His Word in your heart (verse 18).

  • Speak: Keep His Word in your mouth (verse 18).

  • Trust: As a result, your trust will be in the Lord (verse 19)

  • Verses 20 and 21 tell us that God has written His Word that we might know the words of truth.

As we listen to, apply, and keep God’s Word in us, speaking it forth, our trust will be in God, for our trust is based on the certainty of the words of truth.
