Moving Beyond Immaturity, Insecurity, and Inexperience

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. James 1:2-8 (KJV)

Our spiritual growth and continual maturing are crucial. Immaturity holds us back from what God wants us to be, how He wants to use us, and from everything He wants to release to us. It is true that God meets us where we are and works in us to help us overcome immaturity- as long as we’ll admit we need His help and will submit to His correction and development.

Immaturity can be tied to insecurity, or an unsureness about who we are and what we can do. And it can all be related to inexperience. Inexperience can cause us to be taken advantage of or to make bad decisions based on our limited knowledge. God uses experience to mature us in our minds, character, and decision-making, giving us the ability to handle life better. As we begin to learn and grow, insecurity begins to fade away. As a result, we won’t fall apart when someone doesn’t like us or affirm us.

Experience with God can produce security. When we mature in Christ as we walk with God, we gain more experiences based on God’s Word. God becomes our Rock and we become immovable no matter what comes our way. For example, when we experience God healing our physical bodies, we gain security that God is the Healer, and we gain maturity in our faith for healing. As a result, we are better-equipped to believe for healing in the future, and we are not moved by symptoms or other circumstances.

As we walk with God, gaining more experience with Him, He takes us from inexperienced to experienced, from insecure to secure, and from immaturity to mature in Him. As we continue to experience God more and more, we progress towards wholeness in every area of life.

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. II Peter 3:18 (KJV)
