The Blood Covenant: New and Improved

The Blood Covenant: New and Improved

Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. Luke 22:20 (KJV)

The blood of Jesus was shed, or poured out, to cut a new and better covenant. Every promise of God to the believer is based on the blood of Jesus and the New Testament, or new covenant, made in His blood. We have a blood covenant with God, not based on the sacrifices of animals, but based on the sinless blood of the Savior of the world. This is a new and better covenant, with better promises than the Old Testament provided.

So all of this magnifies the truth that we have a superior covenant with God than what they experienced, for Jesus himself is its guarantor! Hebrews 7:22 (The Passion Translation, TPT)

Jesus has been given a priestly work that is superior to the Levitical priests’ work. He also brings a better promise from God that is based on better guarantees. Hebrews 8:6 (God’s Word, GW)

The new covenant makes us new creations in Christ. The first covenant merely covered man’s sins for a time and had to be offered more than once. The second covenant, because it is based on the perfect offering of a sinless man’s blood, totally removes sin and does not have to be offered more than once. It makes us new.

So now, because of the New Covenant in the blood of Jesus, we can have complete freedom from sin. When we believe and claim the promises of God, we exercise our rights as beneficiaries of the new and better covenant.
