God Speaks Out of Who He Is
Therefore My people shall know My name; therefore they shall know in that day that I am He who speaks: ‘Behold, it is I.’ ” Isaiah 52:6 (NKJV)
If you have ever struggled to determine whether the voice you are hearing is God or not, this verse should help. It tells us that the names of God show His character and nature and how He speaks to His people. Therefore, if we know the names of God, we know who God is and we know His voice. God speaks to us out of who He is. I can’t list them all, but here are a few of God’s names.
Elohim (Genesis 1:1)- God in the plural form, speaking of the power of the Trinity seen in the creation of the world.
El Elyon (Psalm 7:17)- God Most High, telling us God is above all.
El Shaddai (Genesis 17:1)- God Almighty, describing God as all-powerful, and all-sufficient.
Jehovah Jireh (Genesis 22:13-14)- The Lord Our Provider, speaking of the God who sees and meets our needs.
Jehovah Nissi (Exodus 17:15)- the Lord my Banner and Victory, saying that Jesus is our Victory.
Jehovah Shalom (Judges 6:24)- the Lord is Peace, pointing to Jesus as our peace and the source of wholeness and completeness.
Jehovah Tsidkenu (Jeremiah 33:16)- The Lord our Righteousness, describing Jesus as our Righteousness, the One who became sin so we could be righteous.
Jehovah Shammah (Ezekiel 48:35)- The Lord is There, telling us that Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us.
The list goes on and on, but you get the idea. God speaks to us based on who he is, and His Names reveal who He is. He will never say anything that does not line up with His character. If we hear that God will not heal us, we can easily know that it is a lie. We know that Exodus 15:26 calls God Jehovah Rapha, God our Healer.
As we read in Isaiah 52:6 and in Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush, God is known as “I Am.” In the Gospel of John, we see the connection between God and Jesus because Jesus uses the phrase “I am” repeatedly. I am the Good Shpeherd. I am the Bread of Life. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. These all point to the fact that Jesus is God and His nature matches that of the Father. And we know that Jesus is present through the Holy Spirit to bless, heal, protect, provides, etc., -all based on His Names.
So the next time you need to determine if you are hearing God or another voice, ask yourself if it is speaking in line with the names of God. God never contradicts who He is.
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. John 10:27 (NKJV)
