Guidance From Above
When you turn to the right or turn to the left, you will hear his voice behind you to guide you, saying, “This is the right path; follow it.” Isaiah 30:21 (The Passion Translation, TPT)
There isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t need the guidance of God- in things both large and small. As I was thinking on the subject of guidance, I jotted down some key ideas about guidance from Scripture that I want to share with you.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Romans 8:14 (KJV)
We are to be led and guided by the Holy Spirit, Who is our Guide. God’s guidance will come through the Holy Spirit and will be in line with God’s Word. What His Word says is what we should do (Luke 1:38). It might not be comfortable but it will always be correct. We should trust God’s guidance and direction above human wisdom or intellect (Proverbs 3:5-6). Wisdom from God will always lead us in the right direction (Proverbs 8:14).
We may receive His guidance through reading the Bible, a prophetic Word (Matthew 1:22-23), dreams (Matthew 1:18-21), visions (Acts 10:1-16), or even angels (Hebrews 1:14). God will guide us by our godly desires (Psalm 37:4-5), and give us wisdom on how to accomplish it (Proverbs 3). We can gain guidance through good, godly counsel from mature and experienced believers (Proverbs 15:22).
We must constantly judge how we are being guided to ensure it is from God. We can ask ourselves questions, such as, “Is it a righteous endeavor, free of sin or compromise?” (Psalm 23:3) “Do I have peace about it?” (Colossians 3:15) “Will it bring me satisfaction?” (Ecclesiastes 3:13) “Will it require faith to accomplish?” (Romans 1:17) “Can I use my gifts to do it?” (I Peter 4:10) “Does it match my call?” (I Corinthians 7:20, 24). Such questions will help us to consistently pursue the proper guidance and not get on the wrong track.
As we follow God’s guidance we must be certain to remain patient. Most things that are worth having take time (Hebrews 6:13-15). Being committed to God’s leading is critical, no matter what (Daniel 3). When we learn to wait on God’s timing, we will find our path is smoother and the results are better (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 11). Allow God to open the doors and don’t try to force them open. When something is God’s will, things line up and we won’t have to manipulate them to get them to work (Revelation 3:7-8).
As we follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, He will bring the provision we need. Where God guides, He provides (Philippians 4:19). He will line up divine connections (I Timothy 1:1-2) and bring supernatural favor. He will hook us up and place us where we cannot place ourselves (Esther 2:17, 5:2).
It is by the Lord’s guidance that we succeed in life. When we rely on His leading and direction, we are assured of victory.
