Freedom From Sin Consciousness
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14 (KJV)
The word conscience in the verse is translated as inner most being in the English Standard Version (ESV). In other words, it refers to your spirit.
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Hebrews 10:22 (KJV)
Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly. Hebrews 13:18 (KJV)
According to the Greek, our conscience lets us know within ourselves what is right or wrong, to know God’s will and govern our lives. It works through the process of thought of what is good or bad.
So, what is sin consciousness? It is when you are always conscious of sin and feel you need to be forgiven. When we ask for forgiveness and we do not accept the forgiveness offered by God, that is when sin consciousness becomes a problem. When God forgives you, you must receive that forgiveness and then forgive yourself. If you don’t, then you will not forget the sin you committed and your mind will be on it. As a result, you will feel wrong and you won’t have confidence with God. And when we don’t feel right with God, our prayers are ineffective because we feel like we don’t have a right to have our prayers answered. Sin consciousness robs us of our righteousness. Although God made us righteous, if we do not accept it then we still feel wrong. So what do we do about it?
Accept that Jesus’ blood washed you. Apply the blood of Christ to your conscience by saying out loud that you know Jesus’ blood washed you and saying that you receive God’s forgiveness (Hebrews 9:14).
Knowing we are clean and righteous gives us assurance to draw near to God in true faith. Wash your conscience and thinking with the Word of God (Hebrews 10:22, Romans 12:2). We can renew ourselves to our righteousness (II Corinthians 5:21) because Christ is our righteousness (I Corinthians 1:3). As we declare ourselves as righteous, this will reinforce our righteousness, our right standing with God. You will see yourself as righteous, which destroys sin consciousness. You have a right to claim God’s promises for your life (II Corinthians 1:20).
Begin to believe you have a good conscience, washed in the blood of Jesus and the Word and Spirit. You will see yourself this way, which is the way God sees you. And you will believe it and act like it. You will walk in a good conscience, not condemned by a guilty conscience.
Sin consciousness is a tool of the devil to rob us of our rights in God. When we understand who we are in Christ because of the blood of Jesus, we can be free of sin consciousness once and for all.
