The God Man
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Philippians 2:7 (KJV)
Jesus made Himself of no reputation. The Greek word for this is kenosis, meaning He emptied Himself or laid aside His heavenly glory, His position and His riches. He emptied Himself of His divine attributes to take on human form. He gladly laid His diety down and came to earth as a man. He was still God, so you might call Him the God Man.
Scriptures attest to the fact that Jesus did not do miracles as God, but as a man anointed by the Holy Ghost (Luke 4:18-19) That’s why there is no record of Jesus doing any miracles until the Holy Spirit had come upon Him and empowered Him.
Kenosis speaks of Jesus emptying Himself as one pouring out water to empty the contents. Jesus emptied Himself of His glory, leaving the Father to serve humanity.
Let’s look at Philippians 2:6-11 (KJV).
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Jesus was and is equal to God.
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Jesus did not rely on His place in the Godhead, but became a man to serve man.
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
As a man, Jesus humbled Himself and died on the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Because of what Jesus did, God exalted Him to the highest position and Name.
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
All beings will bow before Jesus- whether in heaven, on earth, or in the underworld.
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
And when all is said and done, every tongue will have to say that Jesus is indeed Lord.
Jesus started with the Father in divine glory. He is now back with the Father, but as God the Son (John 17). Jesus picked back up His Godhead position. While on earth, He was God, yet He was man. He had laid aside His divine attributes to redeem mankind. Now Jesus is truly the God man. As God, He is One of the Trinity. Yet as man, He is like us. Thus, there is now a God man in heaven representing God to man and man to God. Jesus has been forever changed- just to save mankind. Surely if Jesus made such a sacrifice for us, can’t we do at least the same for Him? Let us lay down our lives for Him. He laid down His deity and His life for others, so let us lay down our lives for Him to bring others to the Father.
