A New Way of Life- Part 1
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. I John 3:9 (KJV)
Before we were born again, we had a sin nature, which meant that, as sinners, we sinned. We practiced sin as a lifestyle, a way of life. We sinned because we had a sin nature. Sin was what we did because sinners is what we were.
When we were born again by God’s seed, His Word, the old sin nature passed away and we received a whole new nature- God’s nature (II Corinthians 5:17).
In the verse above, the word seed is sperma in the Greek, referring to reproductive seed. God injected His seed into us by His Spirit, and new life was created in us- a new nature. In similar fashion to what happened with Mary when God placed His seed into her and she gave birth to Jesus Christ. God’s seed contains His DNA, His very nature, and when we were born again, that DNA, that nature, was imparted into us. We became born of God and the old sin nature passed away.
Because our spirit is born of His Spirit, we have a new nature and we cannot commit sin. In the Greek that means that we cannot deliberately, habitually, knowingly practice sin as a lifestyle. Because we have the nature of God, we will not purposely sin and remain in sin. We may mess up, but we won’t keep sinning as a lifestyle because the seed of God, His Word, is in us and we have the nature of God.
