An Undivided Heart

Recently I was telling the Lord that I didn’t understand how some people, and even some ministers, can say and do what they do, supporting things that the Bible specifically calls sin, such as abortion, homosexuality, etc. The Lord spoke a phrase to my spirit, “a divided heart.” What did He mean by that? Well, God reminded me of King Solomon, who started out well, but he did not continue on that path. Instead, he allowed his heart to become divided.

Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done. Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. And so he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings and sacrificed to their gods. I Kings 11:1-8 (English Standard version, ESV)

Solomon had many loves, among them being women, things, and other gods. He did not serve God like his father David did. David served God with his whole heart. There it is- we must serve God with our entire heart; we can’t allow it to be divided. We can’t serve two masters. Solomon served the Lord, but he also served other gods. His heart was divided between them. Jesus told us that we cannot serve two masters because we will love one and hate the other.

We must guard our hearts and serve God whole-heartedly, leaving no room for compromise. We must stand on the Lord’s side. When we serve God with all our hearts, we show Him that He has our undivided attention and adoration. He will not share the glory with another, and we should not try to force Him to. We are to be running after God and walking with Him. Those who have undivided heart towards God will stand and last. Those who don’t will fall away. Choose this day whom you will serve- then serve Him with all of your heart.
