Are You Really Ordering What You Want?
My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. Proverbs 2:1-9 (KJV)
Have you ever ordered something you thought you would like but it turned out to be different than you anticipated? I was at a restaurant recently, and I ordered a meal that I thought would taste a certain way. When it arrived, it was different than I thought it would be. It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t what I was expecting, and although I was thankful for it, I said “I won’t order this again.” We’ve all had experiences in life where we thought we wanted something, only to be disappointed when we get it. And we promise ourselves that we’ll never do it again.
Life on earth and all the things of the world are never meant to satisfy us. Yes, we can enjoy life, and we can enjoy some things in this life, but only One satisfies us deep down. If we don’t spend time with Jesus, coming to Him and allowing Him to fill us with Himself, we will never be satisfied. As a result, we’ll try to fill the void with natural things, and attempt to meet a spiritual need with physical means.
So the next time we think we want something, we must make sure it is really what we want. Ask, “Is this really what I think it is?” “Is this really what I should do?” Pray, seek, and wait on God. The Holy Spirit will give you an answer, whether it be a green light to go ahead or a red light to stop. He will guide you. As we listen to God more and more, we can avoid a lot of bad decisions, mistakes, and disappointments. God will lead us in the way that we should go, and we’ll be happier and more satisfied knowing we made the right choice and followed the Lord.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21 (KJV)
