Faith of Our Fathers
As we celebrate Independence Day today, let’s go back to the early days and reestablish the principles upon which this country was founded. On April 29, 1607, those who had sailed to the New World from England came ashore in Virginia, erected a seven-foot wooden cross where they landed, and prayed corporately to dedicate this land to God. That was their first official act in the New World. Pastor Robert Hunt led them in prayer, declaring that this land would be founded for the glory of God and to take the Gospel to the world. That is what began the settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. Here is that prayer:
We do hereby dedicate this Land, and ourselves, to reach the People within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to raise up Godly generations after us, and with these generations take the Kingdom of God to all the earth. May this Covenant of Dedication remain to all generations, as long as this earth remains, and may this Land, along with England, be Evangelist to the World. May all who see this Cross, remember what we have done here, and may those who come here to inhabit join us in this Covenant and in this most noble work that the Holy Scriptures may be fulfilled.
After the prayer, they read from Psalm 22.
All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the kingdom is the Lord's and he ruleth among the nations. Psalm 22:27-28 (KJV)
Their prayer became a prophecy. Today, let us echo that prayer and those Scriptures. Let’s dedicate ourselves anew to standing for Christ in this nation and around the world. And let’s not forget the inscription on the Liberty Bell, which came directly from Leviticus.
Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants thereof. Leviticus 25:10 (KJV)
Our nation was founded for God. Our forefathers established this country to honor God and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. While our leaders may have strayed from this, we, as a godly remnant, can continue to decree the same words used by our founding fathers. We can continue to carry the torch of liberty and truth. And I know that God will honor the faith of our fathers, as well as our own faith, to bring deliverance to America and the world. God bless America and let freedom ring!
