God-Minded, Not Need-Minded
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Matthew 6:24-34 (KJV) emphasis mine
Jesus stated that we all have needs but we are to seek God, not the meeting of needs. Notice how often Jesus refers to “take thought” or “taking thought.” It is simply a choice of what we’re going to think about. If we are only mindful of getting our needs met, it takes our attention off God.
We are to keep our minds on God, not worrying about what we need. We must know that God knows our needs and that He can and will meet them. As we seek Go and put Him first, God will take care of us. If we are consumed with worry and always striving to get our needs met, our time and energy are spent on that and we won’t have time for God. This is why the enemy always tries to bring thoughts of lack and worry to us. He knows it affects our focus on God.
We can’t serve two masters. Why? Divided attention always leads us to eventually surrender one of the areas of focus. We end up surrendering to the one we think on and put the most value on.
We have to remember that since God cares about His creation He takes care of it. How much more will our heavenly Father take care of His new creation: His children? Trust that God cares about you and will take care of you.
Seek God’s kingdom and righteousness above all else, and the rest will be given to you. When we put God first, He puts us first. Be God-minded and not need-minded. When you do, God will meet all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus and not by any works of the flesh.
