Love: An Expression of Who God Is
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love…. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. I John 4:8, 16 (KJV)
God doesn’t love us based on who we are or what we do, but based on who He is. This can be a hard concept for some people to embrace, but God’s love is based simply on the fact that He is love and loving people is what He does.
We can’t make God love us more or less. His love is unconditional and unchanging because God Himself is unchanging. Therefore, His love towards us never changes. God loves us on our best day and on our worst day. He loves us even when we don’t love Him.
You can’t change God’s love for you whether you receive His love or not. God is love regardless of whether we believe or don’t believe in Him. God is love all the time. Love is His identity and His identity never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 (KJV)
You can’t earn God love, and you can’t buy or sell it because His love is a gift. Like a gift, His love can be received or rejected. No matter the response He gets, God is still loving. He even loved those who rejected and crucified Him. God loves us more than He loves Himself. To win our love, He laid down His own life.
God’s identity reveals how He will act. He is love so He loves. He is life, so He gives life. He is light, so He gives light. As we believe, know, and receive God, we receive love, And when we receive love, we experience love- in other words we experience God. God who is love is giving us love over and over again because His love is an everlasting love.
