Building On a Prophecy

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. Psalm 40:1-2 (New Living Translation, NLT)

Recently, I was reading Psalm 40 in the New Living Translation. The first two verses reminded me of a prophetic word I received years ago. Part of the Word of the Lord went something like this: “God brought you out of a horrible pit, saved you, delivered you, and put you on a solid rock.” This was a true statement and the prophecy went on to say other things. This statement was in direct alignment with the Bible, which is what a true prophecy should do. In everything we go through, God steadies us as we walk along, making us stable, solid, and sound.

God will give us Scripture that supports a prophecy and adds to it. Psalm 40:3 goes on to speak of a new song, and God was using that verse to add to the prophecy I had received.

He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord. Psalm 40:3 (New Living Translation, NLT)

Since the prophecy I received over 30 years ago, God has given me many new songs by the Holy Spirit. Many, many times a song He gave me fit my day or situation perfectly and it brought me stability.

Later He led me to Psalm 30, which adds the restoration of my health to the prophecy.

O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you restored my health. You brought me up from the grave, O Lord. You kept me from falling into the pit of death. Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones! Praise his holy name. Psalm 30:2-4 (New Living Translation, NLT)

What’s my point? God gives us prophetic words, whether it is through a person, by reading Scripture, by a prophetic song sung over us, tongues and interpretation, or some other means, and He then adds to it. God is always trying to add understanding to us and to build us up by His written Word. Through a prophetic Word spoken or sung, God speaks a Word to us aligned with the written Word. Then He adds more of His written Word to it so He can build on the prophecy. We must stay open to what God is saying, positioned to hear what the Spirit is saying to the church and to us individually.

As we are able to receive it, God is adding more of His Word to us to mature us and help us on our way. He tells us what we are able to hear and receive through a prophecy. Then, a while later, He may show us a verse that adds to our understanding of the prophecy. Then, He may give us even more later. It is all building us and our knowledge of Him so we can walk with Him to be the people of God He desires us to be. As we meditate on the prophecies we’ve received and stay in the Word of God, we will build more and more, enriching our relationship with God all the way.
