What's The Big Deal?

What's The Big Deal?

If you’ve read many of our posts, you will notice a common theme. In the overwhelming majority of them, we reference the importance of the Word of God to living a successful Christian life. Why do we place such an emphasis on the Scriptures? What’s the big deal about the Word?

The Spirit brings life. The flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have been teaching you are spirit and life. John 6:63 (The Voice)

First of all, if Jesus Himself said that His words are full of Spirit and they give life, then why would we not want to center our lives around this life-giving source?

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Matthew 24:35 (NIV)

Secondly, He is telling us that there is nothing in this life that has the permanence that the Word has. If everything will pass away except His Word, then I want to hold onto that which will never be destroyed or defeated. It is interesting to note that this statement by Jesus wasn’t just recorded in Matthew, but it was also included in the gospels of Mark and Luke. Apparently, they all saw the significance of these words.

I will worship toward Your holy temple and praise Your name for Your loving-kindness and for Your truth and faithfulness; for You have exalted above all else Your name and Your word and You have magnified Your word above all Your name! Psalm 138:2 (Amplified Bible Classic Edition, AMPC)

Finally, this verse tells us that God has placed His Name and His Word above everything else in importance and power. And it goes on to say that between His Name and His Word, His Word has higher rank. Wow- God has assigned His Word greater worth than His very own Name.

The name of Jesus is the Name above all names, and at that name every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord. However, according to the verse we just read, the Word of God has been given more value than that Name. And if God gives the Word that much value, then we must do the same.

The bottom line is that the Word of God is the will of God. It is the expression of God. It is His bond and His promise. And it is His love letter to us. According to the Gospel of John, Chapter 1, Jesus is the Word. We must base our lives on the life-giving, unchanging, eternal, preeminent Word. Without it, all we have is dead, dry ritualistic religion that produces nothing of any help to us. Immerse yourself in the Word of God, and live the amazing life He intended you to live.
