Combined Light

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 (New International Version, NIV)

Yesterday we talked about the light of the Word and it ability to give us illumination for the step we are on right now. As the verse above states, believers are called light. So, in addition to the light of God’s Word, we can receive illumination and information from other believers.

We receive light from the Word about our situation. We receive insight from the Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts. And when we go to others that we trust and who are solid in their knowledge of the Word, we can receie additional insight. You might say we are combining our light with theirs for extra illumination. They can hear from God and see things about our lives that we may miss because we are too close to the situation. They can speak into our lives and give us more understanding about where we are and where we are going. But only receive those statements that agree with your spirit. Discard those things that make you uneasy in your spirit. Let peace be your guide.

Prophets are another source of insight. We may be in a church service and a prophet may prophesy over us and tell us things about our lives, our desires, and even our future. When we add this to the illumination we’ve received from the Word of God and from our own times with the Lord, we can see more about what we are going through and where God is taking us. But, once again take care that you only receive those things that are confirmed in your spirit and that line up with the Word. Prophets are human and may miss it.

Like I said yesterday, God will not tell us everything about our future or even about where we are right now. It requires faith to please God, and if we knew everything, faith would be unnecessary. But when we search the Word, listen to the Holy Spirit, and get input from other believers and from prophetic words, the combined light gives us more understanding. God is faithful and will not leave us in the dark.
