Dead To Sin
Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:11 (NKJV)
You are not an old sinner saved by grace. Let me say that again- you are not a sinner saved by grace. You WERE a sinner and you HAVE BEEN saved by grace, but you are now a saint, a new creature in Christ. Old things have passed away and everything has been made new.
When we call ourselves sinners we are looking at ourselves all wrong. In a way, we’re spitting in the eye of the Lord by calling ourselves anything less than the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. People who view themselves as sinners have a sin-consciousness. They are focused on what they do wrong and all the struggles they have instead of what Jesus did to free them from sin.
When we are born-again, the Spirit of Christ comes to live in us, and we are made clean and right with God. The old person we used to be is dead and gone, and a new righteous person has been raised up in his or her place. Do we sin and mess up? Yes, we do. But it does not define who we are. We are defined by Whose we are. We belong to God and we are His children. We are kings and priests, not miserable wretched sinners. I love how The Passion Translation renders this verse.
So let it be the same way with you! Since you are now joined with him, you must continually view yourselves as dead and unresponsive to sin’s appeal while living daily for God’s pleasure in union with Jesus, the Anointed One. Romans 6:11 (TPT)
Know that you are righteous and free from sin. See yourself the way God does. You are alive to God and to His righteousness, and you are dead to sin. You have been made perfect in His sight. Isn’t it time you see yourself the same way?
