Driving Out Darkness
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1-14 (NKJV)
This passage s powerful. It establishes Jesus Christ as the Word and as the Light. This is very important for us, because it shows us the powerful weapon that we have for the times in which we live.
Before I go into that, I have to define the word comprehend so we can see the significance of what we’re reading. The word rendered comprehended by the King James Version and comprehend in the New King James Version actually is the Greek word katalambano, which means to take eagerly, to possess, overtake, seize, apprehend, overcome. So, if we look at how it was used above, we could read that passage to say that the darkness could not possess, overtake, overcome, seize or possess the light. In other words, darkness has no power over light. This also tells us that light has power over darkness.
We know that the light cannot be overpowered by darkness. We can even see this in the natural when we light a match in a dark room; the darkness must leave, even at the light of one small match. And we know that Jesus is the Light. This means Jesus can never be seized or overtaken by the powers of darkness. And because this passage also shows us that Jesus is the Word, we can also say that the Word cannot be overpowered by darkness.
So, if we are facing great darkness, the way to overcome it is by the Word. When we decree the Word, the powers of darkness must bow to it. The darkness must cave to the Light. Right now, darkness is attempting to take over. However, we hold the ultimate weapon: the light of the Word of God. And to come against this present darkness, I challenge you to speak out loud and with the authority given to you by Jesus Christ, the words from John 1 that I have included above. Each and everyday, decree and declare John 1:1-14 for the forces of darkness to hear. This is a weapon in our hands, and this is how we do battle against the enemy. We win by the Word. We win by the Light. We win! We win! We win! As we speak light, the darkness cannot ovetake or overpower us, so speak it out daily!
