Works That Work
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. John 6:28-29 (KJV)
The disciples wanted to do the things Jesus did. They wanted to “work the works of God.” As believers in Jesus Christ, we should also seek to work the works of God. But how do we do that? Jesus gave us the first step: believe in Christ- who He is and His finished work of redemption.
Jesus also demonstrated how to work the works of God.
When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. John 9:6-7 (KJV)
What we need to grasp from this passage is the fact that the blind man had something to do. He had to obey the instructions of Jesus. We must work WITH God to do the works OF God. We must be in tune with the Holy Spirit and be obedient to what He tells us to do. I Corinthians 12 says that one of the gifts of the Spirit is the working of miracles. So, miracles are worked. How? By working with the Spirit of God in believing and acting on what He says. If He says to walk, then walk. If He says to go, then go. Jesus and tthe Holy Spirit are both God, so as the blind man followed God by obeying Jesus, we follow God by obeying the Holy Spirit. By telling the blind man to go and wash in the pool of Siloam, He got him to act on his faith- thus working with Jesus to work the miracle of his healing.
In another situation, Jesus told a man with a withered hand to stretch it forth. When he did, he was restored. More than likely, because of the deformity of the hand, he preferred to hide it, but Jesus made him stretch it forth in front of everyone. In that act of faith, he worked the works of God and received his healing.
We must work with the Holy Spirit and obey His directions. When we do, we will work the works of God.
